The rightwing liberal party, VVD, edged ahead of the left-of-centre Labour party in results from the Dutch election on Thursday, putting it in pole position to lead coalition talks that could result in a government that includes the divisive and anti-islamic party of Geert Wilders.
With 99.6 per cent of the votes counted, the VVD had won 31 of 150 seats in parliament against Labour’s 30 seats. Mr. Wilders’ Freedom party or PVV came third with 24 seats, up from nine in the last election in 2006. An effective government needs to form a coalition of 76 seats.
